United State Government Grant

The Iroquois Constitution

The Iroquois Constitution
As a way of invigorating the teaching of American history and culture, President George Bush announced a broad government initiative. One of the programs proposed by the president will offer grants for curriculum improvement, making important documents accessible to students and teachers. Primary source material, such as replicas of the Emancipation Proclamation, can help children gain a deeper understanding of our past and the principles that are steeped in our cultural roots. In the words of President Bush: "American children are not born knowing what they should cherish--are not born knowing why they should cherish American values. A love of democratic principles must be taught." Primary Sources--Correlated to the History Curriculum--Provide a Firsthand Look at the Documents that Record the Growth of Our Nation Correlated directly to the high school history curriculum, this series is based on the original historical documents that record the political growth of our nation. Rich with primary sources, these books allow students to see pages from each document as they learn more about the ideas within it. Each document is analyzed in detail and placed within the context of our current freedoms. Help your students see firsthand the evolution of political ideas as they read the revisions that each document underwent before it was accepted. This exciting series brings to life the very ideals upon which the United States was founded. Long before there was a government of the United States, Iroquois bards recited and passed down through the generations the law of the Six Nations Confederacy, which gave women the power to remove chiefs and established a system of checks and balances betweenthe different tribes. This constitution was the basis on which the U.S. Constitution was created. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the structure of the American government by entering the world of the Iroquois.

Recollections of the Civil War: With the Leaders at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties by Charles A. Dana,
Early in 1863 General Grant was under a cloud, blamed for heavy Union losses at Shiloh, called an undependable drunkard by his detractors. As Grant moved toward Vicksburg, the Lincoln administration needed to know more about what was happening in the remote western theater. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton dispatched a respected newspaperman. Charles A. Dana, ostensibly to straighten out payroll matters but actually to observe Grant and the situation in the army and report back daily. Dana became "the government's eyes at the front". Recollections of the Civil War, drawing largely on his reports and originally published in 1898, is a classic to rank with Grant's Personal Memoirs (also available in a Bison Books edition). Dana's candid assessment of Grant, other officers, and campaign operations carried weight with Lincoln and Stanton and undoubtedly influenced the course of the war. In these pages, Dana is with Grant and General Sherman throughout the siege of Vicksburg, riding into the city "at the side of the conqueror". Later he is with Grant at Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. He is with General Roseerans at Chickamauga; he watches General Sheridan's troops scale Missionary Ridge at Chattanooga; he walks through the ruins of Richmond; he attends Lincoln on his deathbed. Finally, he sees Jefferson Davis in chains at Fortress Monroe.
